IRS Grants Earthquake-Related Extensions for Certain Hawaii Residents

October 19, 2006 – The IRS has issued news release IR-2006-164, providing limited relief for certain taxpayers affected by the October 15 Hawaii earthquake.  The counties for which the relief applies include Hawaii, Kauai, Maui, and Honolulu, and the City of Honolulu.  Affected taxpayers are those who live in, or whose businesses, tax records, or tax professionals’ offices are located in these counties or city.  Those who had a tax-related deadline falling on or after October 15, 2006, and on or before October 23, 2006, are given an extension to October 23, 2006, to complete the action.

This includes the filing of tax returns, including Forms 5500, Annual Return/Report of Employee Benefit Plan, and the completion of certain time-sensitive tax-related acts identified in Treas. Reg. 301.7508A-1(c)(1). These may include completing rollovers, correcting certain retirement arrangement excesses, etc.
