Traditional and Roth IRAs

2018 Contribution Limit (Traditional and Roth IRA aggregated)

  • $5,500, plus $1,000 catch-up contribution limit

2018 Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) Limits for Traditional IRA Deductions

  • Single active participant: $63,000–$73,000
  • Married active participant filing a joint income tax return: $101,000–$121,000
  • Married active participant filing a separate income tax return: $0–$10,000
  • Spouse of an active participant: $189,000–$199,000

2018 MAGI Limits for Roth IRA Contribution Eligibility

  • Single individual: $120,000–$135,000
  • Married individual filing a joint income tax return: $189,000–$199,000
  • Married individual filing a separate income tax return: $0–$10,000


The deferral limit for SIMPLE IRA plans for 2018 is $12,500, plus $3,000 for catch-up contributions.

Saver’s Tax Credit

The income limits associated with the income tax credit for IRA contributions and salary deferrals in retirement plans are determined by taxpayers on Form 8880, Credit for Qualified Retirement Savings Contributions. The 2018 maximum income limits for tax credit eligibility are $63,000 for joint filers, $47,250 for head of household, and $31,500 for all other filing statuses.
